About me

Hello! I'm Jelle Posthuma - a passionate advocate for sustainability, an aspiring practitioner of stoic principles, and the author of "The Green Stoic: Staying Sane in a Heated World: Ancient Wisdom for Climate Conversations" With a strong academic background in Sustainability Science and International Studies, I am dedicated to promoting sustainable living practices and exploring the principles of stoicism.

I work as an Environmental Specialist in the horticultural sector in the Netherlands, where I analyze the environmental footprint of horticultural supply chains and translate sustainability-related data into actionable strategies. In my free time, I also contribute as a Junior Research Fellow at the International Development Research Network (IDRN), a think tank that aims to elevate young people and graduates with a passion for writing and rigorous research expertise. At IDRN, we are driven to rethink and regenerate Europe for future generations.

As a Research Fellow for IDRN, I have written three articles addressing sustainability challenges in Europe:

Transparency In Action: The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive Explained

The Soil Crisis: The EU Soil Strategy Explained

PEF Methodology: Game-Changing authentication for green product claims

I felt compelled to write "The Green Stoic" as a means to introduce stoicism as a guiding philosophy for young sustainability professionals like myself, sustainability advocates, or anyone who cares about sustainability as they navigate the polarized society we live in today. Drawing from my own experiences and the benefits I've gained from practicing stoic principles, the book embodies my conviction that individual actions can create collective change and that stoicism offers a practical and powerful framework for addressing the challenges and complexities we face in our modern world.

Outside of my professional and academic endeavors, I am involved in the Rotterdam music scene. I have helped organize events for FOCUS, a listening event series inspired by listening bars worldwide, that aims to bring together open-minded, music-loving people through unique sonic experiences. The events showcase new songs and extraordinary sound systems, allowing attendees to experience music the way the artist intended it.

My passion for music also extends to my personal life, where I used to host a jazz podcast, attend live music events, play chess, and travel whenever the opportunity arises. Navigate to the ‘stoic soundscape’ section of this website to follow my monthly playlist.
